BarCamp Bank London 3

On Saturday, 30 January 2010, the 3rd ever BarCamp Bank London was held in Richmond. This event was created to foster innovations and the creation of new business models in the world of banking and finance. 75 people registered for this unique BarCamp including people from Visa, HSBC, Citigroup, Consult Hyperion, MobilPay and MPS (Italy).

For those who have never experienced a BarCamp (or non-conference as they are sometimes referred to), these events usually focus around one topic but the actual sessions are run by the participants. For BarCamp Bank London, everyone threw out their questions which were grouped together to form three sessions in the morning and three in the afternoon. The sessions included:

  • Open Standards for Payments

  • New Entrants in Banking

  • Financial Exclusion – Can Tech Help?

  • Value added services

  • ID/ authentication

  • Community currency

It was interesting to see finance/banking types come along to engage in open conversation about the future of finance. The general air pointed towards change and one observer commented: “If you want to maintain everything you have, you won’t innovate. Take a risk. If it’s good, people will change.”

Overall I think the event went well and participants left feeling invigorated and challenged. Richard Johnstone commented that “it was a great opportunity to exchange views with people involved in widely varying activities and projects related to financial/banking/payments innovation.” I’m happy that I got to come and sit in with this group of innovators and I look forward to the projects and new ways of thinking that develop from this day.
